Raising funds for the Jo Cox PhD Studentship in Refugee and Migration Studies on Giving Tuesday

The 28th November 2017 is “Giving Tuesday”

Giving Tuesday is a worldwide initiative supported by the Charities’ Aid Foundation to encourage support for UK charities. For the second year running we will be supporting this initiative and raising money for the Jo Cox PhD Studentship in Refugee and Migration Studies.

JO COX PHD STUDENTSHIP

Jo Cox MP (née Leadbeater,1992) was committed to alleviating the plight of refugees fleeing conflict and other terrible human hardships round the world. She fought for the rights of all at home and abroad, and stood for a politics that unites people rather than divides them. In the lead up to Britain’s referendum on its membership of the EU, she was murdered, not just to the horror of the British nation, but to global condemnation. Jo was an alumna of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and with the permission and active support of her family, the College seeks to honour her memory and her work by making its own contribution to the understanding of migration and refugees.

With the strong support of Jo’s family, we have worked to create a Jo Cox Studentship which will support a PhD student doing research in the field of migration and refugee studies. With help from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, generous donations from Pembroke members, and fundraising by students, we have so far raised nearly £90,000 towards our initial total of £120,000 to enable this studentship to be established, and we will shortly be seeking applicants to start their PhD in October 2018.

How you can help

On Giving Tuesday 2016, you helped us to raise a wonderful £13,500 towards the Jo Cox Studentship. This year, on Giving Tuesday 2017, we are hoping to equal or better that amount, to get us that bit closer to fully funding two consecutive Jo Cox Scholars. Please consider making a gift of any size today, and encourage your friends to do the same!

THANK YOU!
